Jackie W. Smelser

Jackie Wayne “Jack” Smelser, age 71, of Great Cacapon, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Friday, Sept. 25, 2020. at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland while under cardiac intensive care.
Born March 5, 1949,, in Lafe, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Champ Bertrum and Rosa Cathryn Warthan Smelser.
He was a member of Love Assembly of God in Berkeley Springs where he served on the building committee and was on the Board of Trustees. He attended public schools in Flint, Michigan and retired from the Martinsburg Division of General Motors where he had been employed for 37 years. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local #1590. Jack enjoyed playing the guitar, traveling with his wife, and singing for the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Betty Lou Hutchinson-Powers Smelser, at home; his children, Jacklyn Fagan and her husband, Michael, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jaime Ugaz and her husband, Carlos of Baltimore, Maryland, Billy Smelser, of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, Joy Castro and her husband, Jose, of Shepherdstown, Marty Powers, of Great Cacapon and Lori Woodal and her husband, Scott, of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Ronald Smelser and one sister, Carla Babcock, both of Montrose, Michigan; 17 grandchildren, Stephen and David Kuykendahl, Donna, Carly, Joey, Rachel, Emily, Kimberly, Hannah, Benjamin and Leah Ugaz, Krissy and Kory Smelser, Katylyn and Gwendolyn Spates and Levi and Colby Woodal and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna June Breckenridge Smelser and two brothers, Albert Ghryaine Smelser and Doyle Smelser.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, at Love Assembly of God, 42 Buzzerd Acres Lane, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Dave Kidwell officiating. Interment will be private.
The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
