James W. Poisal Jr.

James W. Poisal Jr., 92, of Hedgesville, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, at Berkeley Medical Center.

Jimmy was born July 4, 1928, to James William Poisal Sr. and Sara Gilbert Fry Poisal. He was a fifth generation life-long resident of Hedgesville.

He graduated from Shepherd College in 1950 and served in the US Navy from 1950-1954. When his father passed away in 1957, Jimmy took over as owner/operator of the Hedgesville Grocery until its closing in 1984. In 1987, Jimmy started a new career of substitute teaching, regularly filling in at Hedgesville High School over the next 30 years, until 2017. He truly loved that school, donating funds for a new track and soccer complex at the school, which is named Poisal Park in his honor.

Jimmy was life-time member of Mt. Zion Episcopal Church in Hedgesville, where he served as Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Vestry member, and Trustee.

He is survived by one brother, David Paul Poisal of Oaxaca, Mexico; one sister, Elizabeth Boxold of Fountain Valley, California; several nieces and nephews; as well as his very special and dedicated caregiver, Rhonda Bailey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sara Fry Poisal Hollis.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at Hedgesville Cemetery with Father Brian Shoda officiating.
