Alexandra T. Handakas

Oct 30, 2020

Alexandra “Lexi” Thatcher Handakas, passed away Oct. 6, 2020. She was born in Martinsburg, March 31, 1965, to Nick Handakas and Rebecca Ellen (Thatcher) Handakas. Her curly red hair signaled that here now was an “old soul” with a feisty streak. She grew up mostly in Martinsburg with brief stints in Baltimore, Maryland and Sparta, New Jersey, and attended Hedgesville High School. She earned a Nursing degree at Shepherd College, now Shepherd University. Lexi’s career as RN was mostly spent caring for kidney patients requiring dialysis.

Lexi bore one daughter, Brianna, now age 16, who was the light of Lexi’s life. They were an inseparable pair, members of an exclusive two-person club.

Lexi was always one to follow her own path and not inclined to take instruction from others. The last several years of her life found her in increasing ill-health and unable to contribute to her profession any longer.

Mention should be made of Lexi’s grandparents. Though they are no longer with us, they had a positive influence on her while they were in her life. They are: Georgios Handakas and Efrosini (“Frances” or “Yaya” to her grandchildren) Hadjitheologou Handakas. Lexi’s father was our beloved Nick Handakas. Dorothea (Hughes) Thatcher and Edward Newton Thatcher; May they gather her into their loving arms in that mysterious place we call Heaven.

Those who have loved Lexi wish her a peaceful eternal rest. She is survived by her daughter, Brianna, and her mother, Rebecca Ellen (Thatcher) Handakas Gregory and Kenneth Gregory; her brother and his family, Gregory, Meredith, Grace and Nick Handakas; and her sister and her family, Marika Handakas, her son, Hugh, and Hugh’s wife, Andrea. She will also be missed by close friends and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. An announcement of a memorial service will be made contingent upon the state of world health.

Bless your heart, Lexi, we know you are giving the angels some excitement.
