James L. Harrell

James Luther Harrell, 83 of Middleway passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Dec 22, 2020 under the care of his loving wife, children, grandchildren and Hospice of the Panhandle. Born August 19, 1937 in Shepherdstown, WV he was the son of the late Raymond Luther Harrell and Helen Creamer McElroy.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He graduated from Charles Town High School. He joined the United States Army and served in Germany.

He retired from the 3M Company after 35 years. He worked part-time at the Charles Town Race Track for over 16 years. After retirement he worked at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown for 10 years. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church.

He was an avid gardener and loved to share his vegetables with family and friends. Growing up he loved to work on his uncle’s farm with his cousins. He looked forward to having coffee Sunday mornings with good friends at Needful Things and Billie’s Restaurant. Jim was the type he never met a stranger. He loved to talk to everyone. While he had many friends there were three special lifelong friends. Billy Howell and Jim served together in the Army, Ralph Eaton from VA met Jim while working at the race track and his special friend, Boteler “Junior” Link, Jr. were friends for over 70 years.

Jim always had a passion for baseball, the Dodgers and Nationals were his favorite teams. He looked forward to watching Washington Redskins football. He loved listening to country music into his final hours.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Wanda Lloyd Harrell; three children, James Luther Harrell, Jr of Summit Point, WV; Raymond Harrell and wife, Wanda of Winchester, VA; Stacey Harrell Ebeling and husband, Art of Harpers Ferry, WV; eight grand-children and five great grandchildren; sister, Janet Harrell Lloyd and husband Russell and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Dunlap.

Family wishes to conduct a private graveside service on Monday with Pastor Duane Jensen and Pastor Kelly DeRonda officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430, Asbury United Methodist Church 110 W. North St. Charles Town, WV 25414; or Alzheimer’s Association.
