John J. Hostler

John Junior Hostler, 83, of Shepherdstown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021, at the Inova Fairfax Hospital. Born Jan. 22, 1938, he was the son of the late George Hostler and Frances Gray. After the passing of his parents, he was raised by the late Mertle Gray Penwell.

John served in the U.S. Navy and was a construction worker by trade.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Lorraine Hinton Hostler; two sons: Johnny Hostler, and wife Christine, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Sean Costello, and wife Christy, of Shepherdstown; three daughters: Robin Hostler Coulter, and husband James “Patrick,” of Harpers Ferry, Brandy Zentmeyer, of Shenandoah Junction, and Kimberly Greist, and husband Rick, of Grandy, North Carolina; two sisters: Lorraine Collins, of Ranson, and Ginny Penwell, of Falling Waters; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and Ms. Penwell, he was preceded in death by his son, Ellis Miller Costello, Jr; seven brothers: George, Nelson, and Gene Hostler, Obie Johnson, Charles and Robert Penwell, and James Kerns, and two sisters: Ella May and Mary Penwell.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at the Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home with Henry Christie officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Visitors are required to wear mask, practice social distancing and follow directives.
