Steven ‘Tom’ Patterson

Tom Patterson, 73, of Charles Town passed away Friday, Feb. 19th, 2021 at Jefferson Medical Center.

He was born on Nov. 3, 1947 in Decatur, Illinois. He was the son of the late Jon Olson and Mary Beth Piper Olson.

Tom was a professor of sociology at Shepherd University and the University of Maryland for 45 years. He loved his granddaughters more than life itself, loved his Bassett hounds, his hotrod 1937 Chevy, and traveling all 50 states. Tom honorably served with the U.S Navy for 3 years, 9 months, 3 weeks and two days serving on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia Beach Patterson, two sons; Christopher Patterson and wife Danielle Noland of Kearneysville, and Joshua Patterson and wife Kaycee of Charles Town; two granddaughters; Julianna and Kaydence; a sister Sheri Beckner and husband Steve of Half Moon Bay, California; niece Madeleine; two special friends Jeff and Jim McDonald- Mueller. Services will be private.

Arrangements are by the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
