Nancy H. Benjamin
Nancy Helen Benjamin, 87, of Shepherdstown, WV passed away Feb. 24, 2021.
Nancy was born July 23, 1933 in Washington DC, daughter of the late Martha Clark and Raymond M. Florance.
Originally from Chevy Chase, MD Nancy graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1950. She attended Salem College in North Carolina, receiving a B.A. in Piano in 1954.
As an accomplished pianist, her first concert performance was at age 7, and she proudly trained under Hans Heidemann at Salem. She taught piano at Montgomery College, in many Montgomery County Public Schools, served as the primary pianist in multiple churches (both in MD & WV), and continued to offer private lessons throughout the years. Her faith was central to her life – her favorite verse was Psalm 27:1 (“The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear?”). She loved dogs and one of her favorite pets was a Keeshond named Aslan (after ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ by C.S. Lewis).
Nancy, was the founder of “Health Unlimited,” as well as “The Incredible You” and “The Uptown Cafe” (Shepherdstown, WV). She had a passion for natural wellness and loved helping others. She participated in ministry missions in countries across the globe, including Russia, Israel, Peru, Ecuador and Dominican Republic. Always remaining active in the community, Nancy was a founding member of Cress Creek Country Club (Shepherdstown, WV), a member of Mt. Zion Church (Charles Town, WV) and Fellowship Bible Church (Shenandoah Junction, WV), a member of The Shannondale Garden Club (Harpers Ferry, WV), and past President and member of the Millbrook Orchestra (Shepherdstown, WV).
Preceded in death by her former husband of 17 years, Ralph W. Van Kirk (1974); her husband of 31 years, Robert S. Benjamin (2006); son Kevin D. Van Kirk (2014), and brother Raymond M. Florance, Jr. (1996). Nancy is survived by her children; Martin Van Kirk (and Emily) of Silver Spring, MD with his 4 children, Megan, Jack, Patrick, and Meredith; Stan (and Sally) Benjamin (Boulder, CO) and their 3 children (John, Christopher, Emma) adding 3 great-grandchildren, Maggie Benjamin LaNoue (Albion, MI) and her 2 children (Charles, Linda), and Bruce (and Linda) Benjamin (Gaithersburg, MD) and their 3 children (Elise, Robert, Christina).
Her funeral will be held at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home; 310 S. Fairfax Blvd, Ranson, WV, at 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2021. Interment will be at St. Andrews on the Mount in Harpers Ferry, WV.
Her family will be receiving friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to “American Diabetes Association” or the “JDRF.”
