Wilson H. White III

Wilson Henry Stout White III, 74, of Kearneysville, West Virginia died Friday April 30, 2021 at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Mr. White known by friends and family as Hank, was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia Oct. 8, 1946. He was the son of the late Wilson H. S. White Jr. and Katherine Schleuss White, and grandson to the late Wilson H. S. White a longtime president of Shepherd College.

He was a 1964 graduate of Shepherdstown High School a salutatorian of his class, he received an A.B degree in secondary education from Shepherd College in 1968 and was awarded a master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1974. He was a mathematics teacher for forty- three years. Hank began his teaching career in Berkeley County, West Virginia serving as a mathematics teacher at both Mussleman High School and continued at Martinsburg High School. Upon his return from graduate school, he served as head of the mathematics department at Charles Town Junior High in Jefferson County, West Virginia for thirty years.

He was one of the first individuals to introduce computers in the class room in the tri-state area, teaching computer programming and computer literacy to students in Jefferson County for twenty-five years. In 1990, Mr. White received the West Virginia Mathematics Teacher of the Year award from the West Virginia Council Teachers of Mathematics. He was also an adjunct professor of mathematics at Shepherd College.

After his retirement from West Virginia Schools, he continued his career at Saint Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Mr. White was a member of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, Kearneysville, where he taught the adult Sunday school class for a number of years. He was a member of Mount Nebo Masonic Lodge #91, A.F and A. M in Shepherdstown.

He is survived by a number of cousins including Dr. James K. Porterfield of Baltimore, Md, Christie Nielson of Caldwell, Idaho, Nancy Cunningham Hansen of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and close friend, former student, and adopted son, Zachary Desotelle whom resided with Mr. White in Kearneysville. Mr. White was the last member of his immediate family.

Friends and family will be received from 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2021 at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, West Virginia.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. May 30, 2021 at Grace Reformed United Church of Christ 421 Kearneysville Pike Kearneysville, WV with Pastor Dave Beeson and Reverend John Rudolph officiating. Private Inurnment will be Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown.
