William May

William “Bill” May, PhD, 76, of Charles Town, WV passed away Friday, June 4, 2021 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility.

Bill was born in Arlington, Virginia, May 16, 1945 and was the son of the late William and Gladys May.

He was a Clinical Psychologist and worked at West Virginia and Virginia mental health facilities. Bill specialized in the treatment of Alcoholics and Addicts and designed a rating system to monitor the outcomes of treatment which is used in several treatment facilities from Seattle to Houston. He also taught at Appalachian State University and Shepherd University.

Bill was born and raised in Virginia and had deep roots in East Tennessee, where he would spend glorious summers with his multitude of cousins. He was a member of the First Families of Franklin.

Bill loved his country, especially the South, and was a firm believer in the Constitution and the Twelve Traditions.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen and his stepsons, Grant and Kirk Hornbeck, his daughter-in-law, Candice and his grandson, Grant Henry Jr., as well as his nieces and nephews, Judy Stoots, Susan Smyth and Steve Smyth.

In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Lamm.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2021 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV with Rev. Taysie Monroe Phillips officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
