Arnold Douglas Amoroso

Arnold Douglas (Don) Amoroso, 85, of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, passed away on Sept. 18th, 2021 at The Berkeley Medical Center. He was the son of Colonel Arnold Dante Amoroso and Eleanor Rutherford Amoroso (nee Shutt).

Don was born in San Pedro, California. He attended the United States Naval Academy, Duke University and was a graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Management. Like his father, Mr. Amoroso had a distinguished military career. He served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot with two tours of duty in Viet Nam. During his first tour, he piloted reconnaissance missions into active battlefields, picking up wounded for medivac back to base. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded by enemy fire to his helicopter. During his second tour, he piloted a squadron of Huey Cobra helicopters in over 1000 assault missions. Mr. Amoroso received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and retired as a Lt. Colonel.

Mr. Amoroso was employed by the United States Treasury as a revenue officer for the IRS, serving 19 years in that capacity. After his retirement in 1999 Don was active in the community, primarily pursuing his love of history. He was a former treasurer of the Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission, former treasurer of the Historic Shepherdstown Commission, active in the Sons of the Confederacy, General Adam Stephen Chapter, Jefferson County Historical Society, American Legion Post 71, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3522, and Friends of Happy Retreat.

Mr. Amoroso was survived by his longtime partner of 30 years, Frances Alexandra Phillips, and his brother, Victor Amoroso, Bolinas, California. He is also survived by his three children, Scott Amoroso, (Jean) Patchogue, New York, Keith Amoroso (Roberta), Campobello, South Carolina, and Stefanie Larson (Joseph), Auckland, New Zealand, and six grandchildren, Rebecca Amoroso, Tabitha Heyer (Chris), Philip Amoroso, Annika Larson, Reese Larson, and Kellan Larson. He also has two nieces, Kristina and Sonia, daughters of Victor and Nancy McDonald Amoroso (deceased).

A private memorial service will be held, followed by internment at Edge Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Please sign the online guestbook and view his obituary at www.mtstrider.com.
