Virginia L. Butler

Nov 19, 2021

Virginia Lucille (Sperow) Butler, affectionately known as Ginny, was born on Aug. 16, 1933, to Charles Billmeyer and Alice Maddex Sperow at their family farm on Winebrenner Road in Martinsburg. At age 88, she arrived to her heavenly home on Nov. 5, 2021, in the loving care of her family.

Ginny was the youngest of three children. Her brother, Charles B. Sperow, Jr. (wife Sylvia) formerly of Morgantown, now resides in Martinsburg. Her sister, Alice Anne Sperow of Martinsburg preceded her in death.

As a 1951 graduate of Martinsburg High School, Ginny attended Shepherd College where she earned a degree in English/library science. She was hired in 1955 by Berkeley County Schools as librarian at Martinsburg South Junior High School. While her career was brief, her love for the man she met on a blind date spanned 65 years. Ginny married the love of her life, Robert S. (Bob) Butler on Nov. 17, 1956. Together they purchased her family’s dairy farm and began raising a family of five children. In addition to her husband Bob, she is survived by four daughters: Anne (Jack) Deardorff, Terry (Steve) Miller, Elaine (Mark) Bobo, and Becky (Scott) Daniel. Her son, David (MaLisa) Butler preceded her.

Her love for others was shared through good food. Her home and kitchen were always open and inviting to her children, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, who enjoyed being spoiled by her pies, sugar cookies, griddle cakes, and patches, all made from scratch. Her nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and friends were all beneficiaries of delicious dishes prepared the way her “momma used to make it”. And of course, everyone wanted a sip of her sweet tea.

Growing up on a family farm and because of her 4-H experiences, Ginny volunteered many hours preparing fundraising dinners for the Berkeley County Youth Fair and serving egg sandwiches from the Youth Fair concession stand.

A celebration of her beautiful life, followed by interment, was held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at Arden United Methodist Church where she was a member for 62-years and active as a Sunday School teacher, auction chairperson, and caring committee leader.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arden United Methodist Church, 4464 Arden Nollville Road, Martinsburg, WV 25403 or you are encouraged to pay a kindness forward in her memory to someone in need.
