George L. Marshall

George Livingston Marshall, retired US Naval Officer, of Key West , Florida, joined his lovely wife Dorothy Ross Marshall, in Heaven on May 21, 2021.

George is survived by his four children , Deborah Ann Snelgrove, Kathleen Marshall, Larry Marshall, Peter Marshall (Tia Marshall) and his seven grandchildren : Christopher Mullins, Megan Lawson, Cara Lawson Applegate, Lauren Marshall, Ross Marshall, Mason Marshall and Scott Zimmet along with seven great grandchildren: Lawson Pritchett , Marshall Pritchett, Kane Pritchett , Maclane Applegate, Hamilton Applegate, Ava Mullins, and Caden Marshall Hennessy-Zimmet.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Anna Marshall and George Fulk Marshall along with sister Ann Holliday Parsons and beloved wife Dorothy Ross Marshall.

George was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia Aug. 24, 1921. He spent his childhood there enjoying the beauty of West Virginia.

He joined the Navy in Aug. 1942 and received his early flight training through the Navy’s Civilian Pilot Training program at Bethany College in West Virginia and Preflight School in Athens, Georgia. He was stationed in Cuba on Antisubmarine Patrol with Patrol Squadron 125 flying antisubmarine warfare patrol aircraft in the Caribbean and the South Atlantic.

It was on “R & R” in Key West that George met his future bride and wife of 74 years, Dorothy Louise Ross, and they were married at the Old Stone Methodist Church of Key West on July 22, 1944. Two years later, the happy couple returned to Washington, DC to begin civilian life together.

After five years of civilian life with Eastern Airlines and Equitable Life Assurance Company, George was recalled to active duty with his Reserve Patrol Squadron 661 during the Korean Conflict. After Korea, he was ordered to Photo Interpretation and Photography School in Washington, DC. Following graduation he joined the staff at the Photo Interpretation Center where he served until Feb. 1956.

He was recalled to active duty in 1958 and called to Pearl Harbor where he joined the Fleet Air Intelligence Augmenting Unit, Pacific Fleet, until May 1958. He then returned to San Diego and was attached to the Staff, Fleet Air as Air Intelligence and Survival Training Officer.

George retired from active duty in 1970 and joined Omni Aircraft where he was in sales. Throughout his military career he was awarded the following medals: American Defense, World War Two, American Theater, Navy Reserve and Armed Forces Reserves.

George was a devoted family man, warm and loving to all around him. He and his wife, Dorothy, retired to Shepherdstown, West Virginia where they built their dream home and enjoyed many years with their children and grandchildren and beloved black Lab, Annabelle. Actively involved with his church, neighbors, men’s club and bridge club, he wore a broad smile everywhere he went. He forged deep friendships with neighbors and engaged with the community.

George’s golden years were spent camping with family, taking family beach trips and enjoying all his years of dedication to the Navy and his hard work.

A burial is planned for 2 p.m. Dec. 11th, 2021 in Elmwood Cemetery of Shepherdstown, WV.
