Anna Bullock
Anna Christine (Chris) Bullock, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on April 9, 1935, in Spillcorn, North Carolina, the daughter of Clarence and Vicie Dunbar. Her father moved the family to West Virginia in the early 1950s to work in the coal mines near Oak Hill.
After graduating from high school, she attended Shepherd College where she met her future husband, Graham (Pete) Bullock. The couple was married in Aug. of 1955 at the Leetown Baptist Church in Leetown, WV and shortly after, departed for Madison Wisconsin where Pete would attend graduate school at University of Wisconsin.
Chris took a break from her college education while in Madison to help support Pete and to give birth to their first child, Jane. After Pete’s graduation, the young family moved to Hoboken, New Jersey where Pete worked briefly for Lipton Foods, before taking a job as a microbiologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife at the National Fish Disease lab in Leetown. The family continued to grow while they lived in government housing for a few years, before building their home near Leetown.
Chris and Pete raised their five children there and when all the kids were old enough to go to school and after Pete had finished his PhD, Chris went back to Shepherd College to finish her nursing degree and receive her RN. After college she worked at Jefferson Memorial Hospital for 16 years, starting as a floor nurse, then charge nurse and finally doing in-service training for hospital staff.
After retiring from Jefferson Memorial, she worked for the Job Corps training center in Shenandoah Junction, as a RN in their clinic for another five years. After retirement number two from Job Corp, she worked for Pete as a lab assistant with the Freshwater Institute in Shepherdstown, for another few years, before retiring for the third and final time in 2004.
Somehow, she was able to find time to do volunteer work with the Ruritan Club, Independent Fire Company auxiliary and Meals on Wheels, while still working. She enjoyed going on cruises and traveling with Pete to the Caribbean, throughout Europe and even to Russia. She lived a rich full life, was a wonderful mother and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
Chris is survived by her brother, Colin Dunbar, her children, Jane Bullock Johnson, Jeff, Dan, Keith and Dave Bullock and her grandchildren, Morgan and Nicholas Johnson.
Please send donations in lieu of flowers to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
