Sally Hofelt

Jan 28, 2022

Sally Ann Ricketts Hofelt, 80 of Sharpsburg, MD, died Monday, January 17, 2022, in her home due to complications from Alzheimer’s. She was born Feb. 17, 1941, to Joseph and Charlotte Stebbins Ricketts in Westfield, NY.

After high school she attended Waynesburg College to get her degree in math education, while attending college she met Rufus Hofelt. They moved to Silver Springs, Maryland so Rufus could attend seminary school while Sally taught in Montgomery County Schools. Rufus decided that social work was a better match for him than the ministry and they moved to build a home in rural Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1973. Sally stayed home to raise their children but kept busy making and selling handcrafts, eventually owning a store in Harpers Ferry, WV. Later she sold dollhouse miniatures and was best known for her miniature room boxes. She attended shows throughout the mid-Atlantic region and for many years she was the promoter of her own show, the semi-annual Frederick Dollhouse and Miniature Show, one of the larger ones in the country. However, when Rufus decided to retire, Sally also slowly eased out of the dollhouse business, and the two were able to spend even more time together during their golden years.

They were able to travel and visit family and host yearly Memorial Day weekends at their home. As well as her miniatures, Sally loved cross-stitch, reading, scrapbooking, and baking. Some of her specialities included her famous chocolate chip cookies and funnel cakes in which she loved sharing the art of making them with her grandchildren. She was very crafty and enjoyed sharing her talent with friends and family. She went out of her way to help friends and family in whatever way she was able to help them.

Sally was previously an active member of the New Street United Methodist Church of Shepherdstown, WV.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Rufus Hofelt, to whom she married on June 20, 1964; two children: Jennifer (Sam) Lofland, of Springfield, PA, and Nathan (Jennifer) Hofelt, of Purcellville, VA; four grandchildren: Sarah, Joseph, Allie, and Noah; a brother, Michael (Kathy) Ricketts, of Mayville, NY; a brother-in-law, Richard Harner, of Jamestown, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Nancy Harner.

Interment will be planned for a future date at the Westfield Cemetery, Westfield, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations to your local Hospice are suggested.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers and staff of the Washington County Hospice. Without your support and compassion for the care of our mother, we couldn’t have done this.
