Gary W. Walsh

Gary Wayne Walsh, 69, of Shepherdstown passed away at his home on March 10, 2022.
He was born Nov. 7, 1952, and he was the son of George and Hazel Walsh.
Gary is survived by his wife of fort-one years, Anna Mary; son, Corey M. Walsh ( Shannon); grandchildren, Madison R Walsh, Violet G. Volkmann (Walsh), Erin E. Walsh, Lincoln Mills, Ava Gifft, Jackson Simpson and Blake Simpson.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Madeline Elizabeth “Beth” Walsh; brother, Hunter Daniel Johnson and sister, Betty Johnson.
A graduate of Shepherdstown High School, Class of 1970, Gary lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Shepherdstown High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019 by the Alumni Association for his records in football and baseball. He was a member of the 1970 West Virginia Championship Team, being the lead-off hitter and was the only athlete at SHS to be chosen for All-State First String Football Team recognition. Gary was a graduate of Shepherd College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. He coached youth basketball for a number of years as his children were growing up. He was employed by Maryland Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, Maryland for twenty-two years and retired as a captain in 2005.
He was a member of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ in Kearneysville, serving on the Property Committee. He was a lifetime member of the Leetown Izaak Walton League and National Rifle Association. Gary enjoyed hunting and fishing his entire life. He was a member of the Windy Knob Hunt Club and treasured the camaraderie of the members in the club. In recent years, he returned to playing pool and was a member of the Four Corners 8-Ball League, where his teammates usually qualified for tournament play, most recently acquiring trophies in the Tri-Annual Championships of the American Pool Association in Dundalk, MD. Gary often qualified as Most Valuable Player in his league and often credited his talent from frequenting Smitty’s Pool Hall in Shepherdstown while a student at Shepherd College.
A graveside service was held 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2022 at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
A Celebration of Life service followed at 11 a.m. at Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, 420 Kearneysville Pike, Kearneysville, WV.
