Janet M. Sherrard

Janet Mae LeDane Sherrard, 93, formerly of Gerrardstown, passed away unexpectedly on March 7, 2022 at her home at Homewood of Williamsport.

Born Dec. 19, 1928 at Brookside Farm, Gerrardstown, she was the daughter of the late Claude W. LeDane and Lena Shade LeDane.

Janet was a life-long member of the Gerrardstown Prebyterian Church where she served in many leadership roles with Presbyterian Women, served as a Sunday School teacher, and sang in the choir. She was known for her cooking, baking, especially beautiful, tasty pies, and her entertaining skills. She enjoyed hosting large gatherings at her home in Gerrardstown for family, friends, pastors and former pastors, and other church and community groups.

She was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School, Class of 1946, and Shepherd College (University). She taught first grade at Inwood School from 1959-1989 and following her retirement provided academic assistance and mentoring to children in the PASS program at Inwood School.

She was a member of Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH), and an active member for many years of the Gerrardstown CEOS and the United Commercial Travelers. She delivered for Meals on Wheels for over 30 years. She collected donations and maintained the street lights in Gerrardstown for many years.

For the past 4 ½ years, she enjoyed her apartment at Homewood of Williamsport.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Hughes (Robert), granddaughter, Kara Hughes (Rick Okonak) and his son, Owen. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed special family times, as her home was often the place for family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul Frederick Sherrard, and her brother Richard I. LeDane.

Family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood. Funeral services were held on the lawn at Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2022, with the Rev. Karen Greenawalt and the Rev. Robert Sherrard officiating. Interment was in Gerrardstown Prebyterian Cemetery.
