Verne D. Hiett

Verne Dow Hiett, 85, of Lake City, FL departed this life to be with the Lord Jesus on Monday, March 6, 2022 in Martinsburg, WV.

He was born May 29, 1936 in Lynchburg, VA to the late A.D. Hiett and Cathryne Candler Hiett and was raised on a farm near Bedington, WV.

Verne was a graduate of Shepherd College where he met his wife Joyce. They were married Aug. 31, 1963. His greatest interests were aviation and farming. During his years at Shepherd he was a member of the WV Air National Guard. He enjoyed a 32 year career as a pilot with American Airlines and had a cattle farm near Winebrenners Crossroad, WV for 28 years. Verne and Joyce moved to Florida in 2001 to enjoy retirement in warmer weather where he continued his participation in general aviation and lived in an airpark.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Hiett (2021) and is survived by his son, Brian Hiett of Martinsburg; his daughter Amy Hiett of Inwood; his grandson Nicolas Hiett, and sister Monona Smith of Berkeley Springs.

Funeral service was held 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2022 at Brown Funeral Home of Martinsburg with Pastor Van Marsceau and Dr. Tom Tribelhorn officiating. Family received friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Casual attire is welcomed.

Interment was in the old Enon Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Largent, WV, following the service, at 2 p.m.
