Katherine V. Fridley

On Sunday, May 15, 2022, Katherine Virginia (Kimes) Fridley peacefully passed into Eternal Life at the Hospice Inpatient Facility, surrounded by her loving children.
Kathy was born on Dec. 20, 1941, to the late Etholene B. (Penwell) Kimes and Marvin N. Kimes.
Kathy’s most prized possession was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She cherished her times spent with family, whether at a family dinner, a shopping outing, or weekends together at the lake. She was always the life of the party with her silly antics, and the infectious laugh that had always been her trademark.
Kathy’s favorite time of the year was Christmas, where she spent days transforming her home into a winter wonderland with multiple trees, lights, and hand-made Santas from Lancaster.
She was known as the “Christmas Cookie Lady”, who began baking cookies at Thanksgiving and often made over 100 dozen. She often opened her home for her “Christmas Cookie Party” with friends and family, sending everyone home with a tin of her fresh baked goodness.
An avid gardener, she worked tirelessly each summer to transform her home into a floral delight. Staunchly proud of the home her father had built and in which she was born and raised; her gardens were her way of keeping her parents’ memory alive.
Kathy was a nurse who spent her working days at Knott’s Nursing Home as the night charge nurse. She had a love for geriatric care, and often shared with her children the trials and tribulations of aging. She often spoke of how nurses must walk an elderly patient’s journey, as they can no longer walk ours. This lesson served her children well as they cared for Kathy in her later years.
A member of the Charles Town Baptist Church, Kathy was a proud chorister. Nothing made her prouder than to perform with the choir and see her children and family in the church listening to her sing.
As a lifelong resident of Jefferson Avenue in Charles Town, Kathy’s closest friends were at ERA Realty. She visited often, if only for a little laughter or a dance around the office. Kathy was a sweet soul, always willing to help a friend or neighbor, most especially in their time of need.
Kathy was a graduate of Charles Town High School, Class of 1959. She attended Shepherd College School of Nursing.
Kathy was preceded in death by her brother Paul N. Kimes (1982) and her sister Phoebe Ann Kimes (1947).
Kathy is survived by her children: Stephanie Kable Spencer, Angela Kable Johnson, and Spencer (Jeanne) Cavalier; Grandchildren: Brittany (Josh) Mills, Katelyn (Ethan) Watson, Kelsey Stoneberger, Blake Johnson, Samuel Spencer, Sarah Spencer, Kyle Cavalier, Marie Johnson, Jameson Cavalier; Great Grandchildren: Emma Jenkins, Mason Mills, Annalee Mills, and Sophia Spencer.
Friends were received from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18 at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Home.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the Charles Town Baptist Church, 203 E. Congress Street, Charles Town, with Pastor Brian Hotaling officiating.
Interment was at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
