Gerald “Jerry” F. Cooperman

Jun 17, 2022

Our community lost a caring and giving Christian man on Saturday May 28, 2022. Gerald “Jerry” Francis Cooperman was an extraordinary family man, neighbor, friend, farmer, animal whisperer, outdoors lover, poet, writer, mechanical wizard and an adventurous soul. Unbeknownst to all who loved him, he died unexpectedly in a field while mowing hay for his beloved sheep and cattle.

Jerry was born on Sept. 29, 1948 at Georgetown Hospital in Washington D.C. to Maurice and Katherine Cooperman. He attended St. James Catholic school and graduated from Bishop O’Connell Catholic High School in 1966 then earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1970. He worked various jobs throughout his lifetime and retired from the Martinsburg Computing Center (IRS) in 2008, but happily continued farming from the 1970s until his death.

Jerry was always a special gift to all who ever knew him. He was wise, brave, loving, intelligent, strong and yet gentle. He had a positive impact on everyone he met by living a true and faithful Christian life.

Jerry is survived and will be forever missed and fondly remembered by his loving wife and best friend Kathryn Murphy, his two loving stepsons and their wives: Chad Byrd (Jessica “Pany”) and Ryan Byrd (Megan), and his four adoring grandchildren: Alexander Byrd, Ariana Byrd, Marleigh Means, and Zachery Byrd. He is also survived by his extended “Murphy” family, his St Agnes church family, and those friends he considered to be his brothers. Since he never met a stranger and had such a huge impact on everyone he met, we cannot possibly list all whom he loved and considered family.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; numerous “Ganley” and “Cooperman” aunts, uncles, and cousins; mother-in-law Darlene Miller, a foster son Freddie Stidham; a nephew Eric Lloyd; many close friends including those he adopted to be his pseudo grandparents Caroline Landreau formerly of Shepherdstown, WV and his early farming mentor Clark Spitler of Luray Va.

Jerry believed in assisting others and loved volunteering in multiple ways at CCAP, in lieu of flowers memorial donations to CCAP or any like-minded organization would have been his preference.

May Jerry rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. June 21, 2022, with visitation 1 hour prior, at St Agnes Catholic Church, 200 S. Duke Street, Shepherdstown, WV.
