Alda Sencindiver

Alda Hays Sencindiver, 94, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Born March 27, 1928 in Berkeley County she was the daughter of the late Oscar L. Hays and Gratta C. Markle Hays. Alda graduated from bunker Hill High School in 1946 and from Shepherd University in 1950 with a BA degree in Education. She taught 2 years in Thurmont, MD before returning to Berkeley County. She taught 1st grade at Gerrardstown for 3 years before taking a break to raise her children. She also worked at Musselman High School and Musselman Middle School teaching Art until her retirement in 1989.

Alda was a lifelong member of Darkesville U M Church where she loved being a member of the choir for many years. She enjoyed needlework, painting, bowling, and traveling. She also loved collecting her many angels and watching her beloved Baltimore Orioles. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Alan K. Sencindiver and wife, Kimberly, and daughter Peggy L. Canby and husband, Larry all of Martinsburg. She is survived by 7 grandsons, Joshua (Fernanda), Benjamin (Hannah) and Eric Sencindiver, Richard (Aimee’), Jeffrey (April), Martin, and Cody (Tiffani) Canby. Also, one granddaughter-in-law, Melanie Canby; fifteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Robert A. Sencindiver; two sisters, Ethel H. Cross and Helen H. Wilkins; a brother, Earl Conrad Hays, who died in infancy; and a grandson, Larry W. Canby, Jr.

Family received friends on Monday, July 18, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.

Interment was in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
