Nancy deNeufville Alfriend

Aug 26, 2022

Nancy deNeufville Alfriend, 89, raised in Yorktown, Virginia and a longtime resident of both Yorktown and Charles Town, West Virginia, passed away Aug. 14, 2022 after a lengthy illness.

She was a 1951 graduate of Poquoson High School, Poquoson, VA and a 1953 graduate of Johnston-Willis Hospital’s School of Nursing in Richmond, VA. She served as a dental assistant in Yorktown for most of her professional life and later resumed her nursing career, culminating as the Head Nurse of the Neurological Step-Down Unit at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, VA. In addition to being a devoted mother and wife, she was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown where she sang in the choir, often as a featured soloist, and served on the altar guild.

After moving to West Virginia, she sang in the local church choir as well as the Masterworks Chorale, a premiere vocal ensemble at Shepherd College. Nancy was an avid gardener and was revered for arranging flowers into breathtaking works of art. She joined the Shenandoah Garden Club in Charles Town and co-founded the Wizard Clip Garden Club in Middleway, WV. Nancy participated in countless fundraisers for church, floral and community organizations over the years. While president of the Shenandoah-Potomac Garden Club, she spearheaded a community service program to landscape the Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, WV, which earned the Beautification Award for Jefferson County. Following a merger of garden clubs, she served as the District Director for the Shenandoah-Potomac Garden Council of the West Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. She taught multiple workshops on flower arrangement design and was often an invited guest speaker at floral conventions. To this day, she is still regarded as one of the most renowned floral designers in WV. Presented with a challenging design project, garden clubbers still ask, “What would Nancy do?”

She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, The Rev. John D. Alfriend. Survivors include six children and their spouses: Emily Alfriend Wilson (Mark); Robert Amory Clark; Margaret Alfriend Rudesheim (Fred); Nanette Clark Johnson (Kevin); Lucy Alfriend Thacker (Lynn); and Sarah Alfriend Kmetz (Walter); 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.

Special gratitude is extended to Trina Haas and Rachael Coyne who provided years of in-home compassionate care and companionship to Nancy.

A celebration of The Holy Eucharist was held at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown, VA at 11 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2022 followed by a graveside service and a reception in the church parish hall.

Expressions of condolences are welcomed as contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.
