Exie L. Irons

Exie Lou Singleton Irons, age 85, a resident of Martinsburg and formerly of Elkins, departed this life on Monday, Nov. 7 following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 29, 1936, at Rosemont, W.Va., daughter of the late Tracy Gordon Singleton and Virginia Florence Lamb Singleton. She attended the Barbour County schools and graduated from Belington High School in 1954. She graduated from Shenandoah College in 1956 and Davis & Elkins College in 1958. After completing her education, she was employed at Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport, Ill., as Director of Christian Education and Youth Director. Upon returning to West Virginia, she taught kindergarten at the Elkins YMCA, was a teacher in the Randolph County School system for many years and served as secretary at Otterbein United Methodist Church.
On July 4, 1966, she married Ronald Dale Irons who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were sisters Dixie Singleton Jones of Elkins and Barbara Singleton Phillips of Belington, stepson Thomas Earle Irons and sister in-law Lois Kessler of Elkins.
She is survived by her son Craig Irons (Amy) of Morgantown, daughter Heidi Nichols of Shepherdstown and stepson Timothy Irons (Dedie) of Elkins. Also surviving are brothers Norman Singleton (Minnie) of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ben Singleton (Janice) of Elkins and brother-in-law Bishop Neil Irons (Susan Hewey Thomas) of Mechanicsburg, Pa.
In addition, she is survived by seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Aaron Irons (Amanda) and daughter Carter of Macon, Ga.; Dr. Jessica Irons of Harrisonburg, Va.; Cooper Irons of Elkins; Alberto Irons (Maggie) of Bethel Park, Pa.; Edward Irons of Morgantown; Hannah Nichols and daughter Eleina and son Colton of Shepherdstown; and Brogan Nichols of Shepherdstown.
Exie belonged to the West Virginia Education Association and the Randolph County Senior Center. She was an active member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church for 50 years, where she devoted her life to working faithfully in service to her Lord as lay leader, delegate the West Virginia Annual Conference, member of the United Methodist Women, Sunday school teacher, church historian, and by singing in the choir. Upon moving to Martinsburg in 2016, she joined Pikeside United Methodist, where she made many friends as an active member.
Friends and family will be received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Elkins 4 p.m.- 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. Bishop Neil Irons will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
