Elizabeth Staley

Elizabeth “Liz” Anne Staley, 40, of Shepherdstown, WV, formerly of New Market, MD, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, after a long journey with brain cancer.
She was born June 6, 1982 to Jim Staley and Mary “Peachy” Barney Staley.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her younger sister, Catherine Staley, brother-in-law, David Robinson, her beloved cat, Hazel and many cousins, aunts and uncles.
Elizabeth grew up in Scrabble, WV on the family farm. She was a member of the Ridge Runners 4-H Club, was a 4-H All-Star, and spent every summer line dancing and singing at county and state 4-H camps. She enjoyed showing her Jersey cattle at the state and county fairs. Liz graduated from Hedgesville High School, Class of 2000, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Education from Marshall University in 2005.
She taught Language Arts at Farmwell Station Middle School and English at Tuscarora High School in Loudoun County, VA. At Tuscarora, she also served as the yearbook advisor and journalism teacher, a role in which she mentored, advised and cheered on hundreds of students. During her tenure at Tuscarora, she took several groups of students to a national yearbook conference at Columbia University, where they won a top national yearbook award. After teaching for over 10 years, she joined Herff Jones as a yearbook Sales Associate and traveled to different schools to support their yearbook advisors and students in Northern Virginia.
Liz was an avid reader, football fan and amateur photographer. Her favorite days were spent at any beach, especially Key West, with a loyal and loving group of girlfriends. Their devotion to Liz sustained and supported her through the last few years of her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Erma Ora Byrd Hall, 301 N. King Street, Shepherdstown, WV 25443, on the campus of Shepherd University at 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 11, 2022, followed by a luncheon. Friends will be received from 10:30-11 a.m. at the Erma Ora Byrd Hall.
Interment will be private.
