Carolyn “Pete” Michael

Carolyn “Pete” Michael, 78, of Bunker Hill passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her immediate family.
Born March 9, 1944, in Frostburg, MD, she was the daughter of the late Robert Taylor Crump and Sara Preston Crump.
She attended and graduated from Musselman High School, Class of 1962. She received her B.A. in Secondary Education from Shepherd College.
Ms. Michael had been employed by the Frederick County Public School Systems in Winchester, VA for 34 years. She spent her entire teaching career at Frederick County Middle School, where she taught Social Studies. She began teaching there in 1965 when the school opened and retired in June of 1999 after a fall that kept her immobile for several months.
She was a member of the Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church for 36 years. She held many positions throughout her membership. She served as an Elder, Liturgist, Church Receiving Treasurer for 10+ years, taught Sunday School, and served on and chaired multiple committees through the years.
After the death of her son, Brian Taylor Michael, she became a volunteer with VOPA (Virginia Organ Procurement Agency) as a donor mother and also became involved with Lifenet, another Organ and Tissue Procurement Agency. Her son, Brian, donated six of his organs at the time of his death and six recipients were given another chance at life! Her sister, Barbara C. Smith, was a recipient of a heart transplant in Sept. 1993 and was granted an extra eleven years of life. After Barbara’s transplant, the two sisters spoke at many conferences telling of their personal experiences; one as the parent of an organ donor and one as the organ recipient.
Ms. Michael was a huge supporter of the Musselman High School Band, the Musselman High Alumni Association, the Berkeley County Backpack Program, and basically any person in need. It was not unusual for her to stroke a check for any student in need of school supplies, clothing, or school lunches.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, James B. Smith Jr., her two nephews, John Christopher Smith (Dianna Domenico) and David William Smith (DeRhonda Smith), both of Martinsburg, and her niece, Laurinda Smith Craver ( Keith Craver) of Hagerstown; five great nieces, Olivia Craver, Victoria Craver, McKenna Smith, Francesca Domenico and Destini Crislip (Cody Crisplip), and great nephew, Bryson Derden. In addition to her family, she is survived by Shawn Kane (Joanna Kane) and daughter, Emerson Kane, who were also very special to her; as well as many other dear friends, neighbors, and church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Brian Taylor Michael; sister, Barbara C. Smith; stepmother, Eleanor A. Crump; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Vernon and Rachel Michael; great nephew, Dustin Waugh and her best friend, Gail C. Copenhaver.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Details and Information will be forthcoming.
