Dorothy Border “Holly” Holinger

On Sunday March 12, 2023, Dorothy Border “Holly” Holinger, dear cousin and friend passed away at the age of 94.

“Holly” to all who knew her, was born April 12, 1928 in Maryland to Margaret May (Border) and John James Wysong, Jr.

She grew up in Charles Town, WV, and Philadelphia, PA.

She graduated from Connecticut College for Women in 1950, received a BA in Political Science and graduated Cum Laude at Swathmore College, PA, attended Harvard while working on a Masters degree, and post-graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.

During her teaching and tutoring career, she taught many youngsters from preschool thru high school. Some of her favorite courses were Mathematics and Science. Holly taught at the Academy of Notre Dame, an all-girls Catholic Academy in Philadelphia and Villanova during the regular term and was director during summer school. She took many of her students on summer educational trips to Europe and had story after story to tell. She strongly believed in education and the Honor Code.

When she wasn’t teaching, tutoring, or traveling, Holly loved playing and watching tennis. She played regularly at the Merion Cricket Club with many friends and then enjoyed visiting with them over a meal.

She volunteered for many philanthropic organizations from the Women’s Auxiliary hospital benefits, to counselor and waterfront director at summer camps. She, along with teachers, parents, and students worked on a study of Jonah and the Whale at Chester Christian School, even building a 15′ boat and a ;39′ mural of Nineveh & it’s people.

Holly is survived by cousins, Carol Lee Dickinson of CT, Rachel Dionne of MA, Ralph Snyder, Mary Anne Garlock, & Mary Lou Childers, all of TX. Special friends, Barbi, and Bobbie, and Ed Gallen, all of Pennsylvania, and Marcia Snyder of TX.

A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2023 at the Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, WV with Dave Owings officiating.

Arrangements are by the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Ranson, WV.
