James D. Huyett

James D. “Jim” Huyett was born in Charles Town, WV on July 12, 1948 to L. Randolph and Sylvia Huyett. He passed away on May 27, 2023.

First attending Shepherd College and then graduating from Pittsburgh University, Jim became a Park Ranger at the Grand Canyon. Next, he joined the Atlanta Fire Department. Setting his sights wider, he then began to work on large construction projects in the United States and around the world, including Zaire, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Belarus. In his down time he liked to jump out of perfectly good airplanes.

Eventually he returned to the family farm. Changing with the times, he switched from production farming to retail growing and became a Founding Farmer with American Farmland Trust. Jim truly enjoyed selling his home grown produce and swapping stories at the farms own Smith’s Market and many farmers markets.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Randy Huyett.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara ” Chipp” Huyett, stepson Christopher Robinson, Uncle Jack Huyett, and dear friend Diane Herring in Charles Town, WV, sister Pat Huyett in St. Croix, VI, stepdaughter Aimee Canby and family in Santa Fe, NM, sister in law Linda Huyett, nephew Randy Huyett, niece Alicia Chimentto and their families in Atlanta, Ga.

Interment will be private. Those wishing to honor Jim could donate to the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County, Hospice of the Panhandle or any charity of choice.

Jim was a larger than life character and he will be missed by many customers, friends and family near and far.
