A. Jerry Bucey
A. Jerry Bucey of Shepherdstown, West Virginia passed away peacefully near daybreak on Friday, June 23, 2023. Jerry is dearly remembered as an affectionate and dedicated husband, loving father, and adoring grandfather.
Born in Steubenville, Ohio and raised in Weirton, West Virginia by his late parents Alfred Bucey and Emma (Stewart) Bucey, alongside his sister Patty, Jerry had a reputation as a mischievous, fun loving child and teen. He was also a fiercely competitive and successful high school athlete, coming to Shepherd (College) University in 1965 to study art and play football. Jerry completed both his undergraduate studies in Sociology and collegiate football playing at West Liberty University. Upon returning to Shepherdstown, he met and married the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Susan Klair Bucey of Glen Burnie, Maryland.
Jerry’s family meant the world to him. From massive things like buying and renovating a two-hundred-year-old house where he and Susan started their family, to ordinary things like packing and lining up family lunches on the counter each morning, Jerry’s love was unconditional and has no end. He always showed up for his kids and grandchildren – as a volunteer coach and referee, as a proud dance recital father, as a parent volunteer shepherding Boy Scouts on camping and hiking trips, as a cheering fan, as an applauding audience member.
He enjoyed a lengthy career working in planning, public works, and community development for both local and state government. Jerry retired from the work about which he was most passionate at Interfaith Housing Alliance in 2007. His professional legacy is seen throughout affordable housing units for seniors and families across Western Maryland. Since retiring he savored time as a grandfather, traveling with Susan, and cultivating his hobbies. Jerry loved fishing, history, gardening, woodworking, and gaming. He was an Antietam Battlefield volunteer and member of the Battery B canon firing crew, served for many years on the Shepherdstown Historical Preservation Commission, and hand-crafted pieces of wooden furniture, bowls, and frames for friends and family.
Left to cherish and honor his memory along with wife Susan are his three children, their beloved spouses, and seven grandchildren – Eric Bucey and Dannah Card, children Nina and Dara of Pulaski, Virginia, Mindy Bucey Yard and Scott Yard, children Laney, Morgan, and Chloe of Hanover, Pennsylvania, and Scott and Stephanie Bucey, children Gracyn and Shepherd of Winchester, Virginia, sister Patty Bucey Beagle of Weirton, West Virginia, close nieces Sandy (Beagle) Collier of Shepherdstown, West Virginia and Jenny (Beagle) Regalia of Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia, sister- and brother-in-law Sally Klair Thomas and Wayne Thomas of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be on Saturday, July 15, 2023, from 1-3 p.m. at The Entler, Historic Shepherdstown & Museum. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory are invited to make memorial gifts to Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (https://netrf.org/get-involved/ways-to-give/tribute-giving/ ), Historic Shepherdstown & Museum ( www.historicshepherdstown.com), Shepherd Ram Gridiron Football Club (https://suathleticclub.org/ram-gridiron-club ), or Interfaith Housing Alliance (www.interfaithhousing.org). Jerry’s dedication to his family and courageous, fighting spirit will be missed but never forgotten by those he knew and loved.
