Norvel L. Willis

Norvel LeNarde Willis passed away on Sept. 9, 2023 at Jefferson Medical Center. He was born Oct. 13, 1941 to Charles William Willis and Geraldine Louise (Gillison) Willis of Harpers Ferry, WV.

He was a graduate of Page Jackson High School in Charles Town, WV, after which he entered the military, serving honorably in the U.S. Air Force. He later pursued an education in broadcasting and worked as a radio disc jockey in Dayton, Ohio.

He was a graduate of Shepherd College and later worked at the college, and was a substitute teacher in the public school system in Jefferson and Berkeley Counties.

Norvel worked with boy scout troops, refereed sporting events, drove a tour bus, worked as an insurance salesman, a Mac Tools representative and as an independent Ams Oil distributer.

He was a long time member of Kings Apostle Holiness Church in Ranson, WV, and in recent years attended Destination Church in Kearneysville, WV.

Norvel was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Geraldine, and his sister, Brenda Diane Willis.

He is survived by his long time partner, Norma Jean Coley; his siblings, Huel Willis and wife Laverne, Douglas Willis, Janis Thomas, Deborah Willis, April Hamilton and husband Alan, Shawn Willis and wife Donna, and Stacy Willis, as well as many nieces and nephews and an aunt.

Services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2023 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV. Family received friends at the funeral home two hours prior to funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to the “Save Harpers Ferry’s Weaver-Gillison House” GoFundMe project, which was Norvel’s latest collaboration to ultimately create a cultural center for his hometown community.
