Susan D. Schott

Apr 26, 2024

Susan Dole Schott, 71, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Shepherdstown on April 13, 2024.

Born on Feb. 26, 1953, in Englewood, New Jersey, Susan was the eldest child of Richard and Joan Schott. Growing up as the oldest among five siblings, she swiftly mastered the arts of mediation, sacrifice, and endless patience. These early responsibilities shaped her into a natural caretaker, always placing the needs of others above her own.

Being an army brat meant frequent relocations; each transition demanded swift adaptability and resilience. This tradition of moving remained a constant in her life, but of all the places she lived, the Virgin Islands held her fondest memories.

Susan was an avid reader and a gifted writer–her work was a treasure for those fortunate enough to read it. A true Trekki, she adored musicals and the outdoors, whether tending to her garden or riding horses. Her love extended to her community, where she dedicated time to volunteer and was always ready to help someone get back on their feet.

Susan is survived by her four children, Jessica Barron, Sam Howell, Chris Howell, and Alex Smith; her five grandchildren, Maggie Ruffing, Michael Barron, Rivers Howell, Ken Jae Howell, and Katlyn Barron; and many loyal friends and extended family members.

Susan will be forever remembered for her generous heart and the unconditional love she shared with everyone she knew. Her legacy of kindness and strength will continue to inspire.

True to her no-fuss nature, Susan requested no formal services, certainly no pomp and circumstance. A celebration of life will be held, with details forthcoming, where friends and family will gather to honor her memory in a manner she would have wanted.
