Dewitt ‘Mr. Dee’ Jacobs

May 3, 2024

On the evening of April 11, 2024, Dewitt Joseph Jacobs, affectionately known as “Mr. Dee,” concluded his remarkable 95-year journey. Born on May 28, 1928, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, to John Dewitt and Sara Jane Staley Jacobs, he lived a life rich with accomplishments and warmth, leaving a legacy of community spirit and familial love.

A proud graduate of Storer College, Dewitt earned his BA in Social Science. He dedicated his early career to education, shaping young minds in Jefferson County. His commitment to service extended to his country as well, as he served in the Army as an Administration Specialist, where he earned numerous accolades, including the Army of Occupation Medal and the Korean Service Medal.

On January 18, 1953, Dewitt married his beloved Anna Delano Jackson, who passed away in 1976. Dewitt’s love for Anna was unwavering, and it was a poignant coincidence that he departed this world on what would have been Anna’s 90th birthday. This was a testament to their enduring love, calling him home to be with her again.

Dewitt’s deep love for his community was celebrated when he was honored as the Grand Marshal in the Shepherdstown 2023 July 4th Parade–a fitting tribute to a man who never met a stranger. His charisma and open heart made him a beloved figure, earning him the title of “Dad” and “Pops” from many drawn into his generous orbit.

His passions were simple yet profound. Dewitt cherished the art of crochet, the challenge of puzzles, and the freedom of the open road behind the wheel of his Oldsmobile. He often surprised friends and family with impromptu visits that were always a welcome delight.

Though Dewitt’s journey was touched by resounding sadness with the loss of his daughters, Valarie in November 2020 and Venita, in February 2024, his strength and love never wobbled. He leaves behind his daughters, Velicia and Vincentia, along with a lineage of grandsons, a granddaughter, great-grandsons, and great-granddaughters who will continue to walk in the light of his wisdom.

Dewitt’s memorial service, set for May 10, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Asbury United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown, WV, will gather those who loved him to celebrate a life well-lived, marked by unwavering kindness and an ever-open heart.

In a life defined by the joy of connection and the duty of service, Dewitt “Mr. Dee” Jacobs taught us all the beauty of embracing community, the importance of living authentically, and the enduring power of love.
