Nancy Jo. Rice Upwright died on June 27, 2024 peacefully at Berkeley Springs Healthcare Center in Berkeley Springs, WV.

She was born on October 19, 1930 in New Market, Va. to Michael Eugene Rice and Maude Minerva Moreland Rice.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla, WV.

She is survived by; daughter, Karen Fitzpatrick and husband, Edwin of Shepherdstown, son Scott Upwright and wife, Tressa, of Inwood, half brother Gene Rice and wife Ruth of Ranson, WV and stepson Eric Collison of Portland, OR.

Additionally, she leaves two granddaughters, Brandy Sharritt and husband, Mitch and their son, Marshall of Martinsburg, Rachel Upwright and her children Ha’Leigh, Destiny and Daxton of Bunker Hill, step granddaughter Meghan Hissam of Morgantown, WV and step grandson Brook Collison, of Portland, OR and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alvin Upwright, her parents and one infant son, Alvin Eugene Upwright.

She attended school at Millville Elem., Martinsburg High School, and James Rumsey institute before graduating as an RN with a bachelor’s degree from Shepherd University.

She enjoyed crafting, reading, traveling, collecting, fishing, and socializing. Her passions also included gardening and politics. She served as the president of the Jefferson Co. Democratic women as well as president of the local ILGWU. She nursed over 20 years at Jefferson Memorial Hospital and enjoyed working for Dr. Mahe after her retirement.

Services will be held at 11 a.m.on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at, St. James’ Lutheran Church 4328 Shepherdstown Pike, Uvilla, WV with Pastor Karen Valentine officiating.

Entombment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, WV.

The family will receive friends at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV on Monday, July 1, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, or Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
