Barbara Brown
Barbara Marie Maddex Brown, of Shepherdstown, passed away Wednesday December 4, 2024 at her home.
Born January 26,1943 at Kings Daughters hospital in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Henry Byington Maddex Jr. and Geraldine Marie James Maddex. She was a life-long resident of Shepherdstown and graduated from Shepherdstown High School in May 1960.
She married her high school sweetheart Richard Hendricks Brown Sr. March 18, 1961, and they quickly began their journey to build a loving home where they raised six children.
Barbara was a devoted homemaker for many years raising her children and carrying for neighborhood children as well. Once her children were grown, she set out to establish a career. She had a passion for the medical field and in December 1981 she obtained her Emergency Medical Technician -Ambulance certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. She began working in the emergency room at Jefferson Memorial Hospital as an EMT and later transferred to City Hospital holding the same position. In 1988 she decided to move to a private practice and began working as a medical receptionist for Dr. Dennis Cullen and later Dr. Vikram Dayal until her retirement in 2004. She took great pride in her work and so enjoyed the time spent with all her co-workers and patients, most especially the pediatric patients.
Once the last neighborhood game of kick the can was played, Barbara set out to turn the yard into her own garden oasis. She spent many hours carefully nurturing every flower and bush and diligently worked to increase the size of her gardens each year much to the dismay of her husband. When she was not toiling in her flower garden you would most likely find her either walking on the Tow Path, at Morgan’s Grove Park, Antietam Battlefield or the street and alleys of the town she loved so dear and called home.
She was married to her husband Richard for 62 years until his death in 2023. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother Henry Byington (HB) Maddex, III.
Barbara is survived by her six children Richard Brown and Kim of Georgia, Ronald Brown and Maria of Ranson, Elizabeth Sigler and Ronnie of Charles Town, Amanda Lutman and Todd of Summit Point, Kathryn Slaven and Jeff of Ravenswood, WV and Margaret Henderson and Patrick of Shepherdstown. Additionally, she is survived by sisters Nancy Byington Maddex Cleaver of Shepherdstown, Margaret Rose Maddex Altieri of Purcellville, VA, sister-in-law Florence Ann Brown Best of Shenandoah Junction, 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and family Monday, December 9 from 6:00-8:00 PM with a Memorial Service to be held Tuesday, December 10 at 11:00 AM. Both will be held at New Street United Methodist Church, Shepherdstown. Interment will be private.
