Roberta ‘Robyn’ Lynn Lance
Roberta “Robyn” Lynn Lance, of Charles Town, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Born on October 3, 1960, in Winchester, VA, Robyn spent most of her life in Charles Town, a place she proudly called home. Throughout her school years, she was actively involved in choir, band, cheerleading, and softball. In 1975, she was honored as Jr. Miss Harpers Ferry. During high school, she received the “Unsung Hero” award in recognition of her dedication and contributions to her softball team. She graduated with the Class of 1978 from Jefferson High School.
Robyn’s greatest passions in life were her family and helping others. From a young age, she felt called to be a nurse, and by junior high, she was already volunteering at a local nursing home in her free time. She went on to dedicate 43 years to her career as a nurse and later as a nurse practitioner, where she truly loved and cared for the people she served.
Robyn earned her associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing from Shepherd University. Her professional journey included 18 years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, where she held several positions as a registered nurse, including working in the post-cardiac surgery step-down unit.
In 2004, Robyn Accepted a nursing position at the VA Medical Center in Martins-burg, WV. While working at the VA, she pursued and obtained her master’s degree in nursing from West Virginia University in Morgantown in 2005, allowing her to expand her knowledge and serve as a Nurse Practitioner. In 2006, she became the first Nurse Practitioner to work at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg. After retiring from the federal government in 2016, she continued her passion for patient care by working in several local nursing homes, where she brightened the lives of many.
Robyn was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town, WV, for nearly 40 years. Alongside her husband, Doug, she led the Monday Meals program for those in need since 2012 and founded a coat ministry for racetrack backstretch workers. She was also a dedicated member of the United Methodist Women and the Secret Sisters at her church.
Additionally, she was involved with the Ranson Park and Playground Committee, where she helped raise funds to support the maintenance and improvement of the park on Mildred Street in Ranson, now known as Lance Slusher Park. She was also an active member of the Summit Point Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) Club, where she served as secretary.
Robyn had a passion for visiting second-hand stores, scrapbooking, playing bingo, and traveling with her family and friends. She also loved dining out and sharing meals with her loved ones. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, as well as those who experienced her kind-ness, compassion, and the many lives she touched through her dedication to helping others.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Doug Lance, who was the love of her life, her cherished son Nicholas Lance whom she loved with all her heart, and by her beloved dog, Resa who she adored. She also leaves behind her sister, Loria (Terry) Headlee; her brother, Bradley Longerbeam; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, William K. and Theresa J. Longerbeam.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Robyn Lance Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund, which supports nursing students from Jefferson County, WV, ensuring that her life’s work of caring for and helping others continues through future generations of compassionate caregivers.

A visitation was held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town, West Virginia. The funeral service began at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Duane Jensen. Interment followed at Edge Hill Cemetery, with a repast afterward in the Fellowship Hall at Asbury United Methodist Church.
