Joseph J. Snyder

Joseph John “Jack” Snyder of Shepherdstown died May 27, 2025 at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center.
He was born on August 27, 1946 in Washington, DC to Joseph John and Amy Josephine (Hamilton) Snyder. He was raised in Kensington, MD and attended Albert Einstein High School. Jack earned a BA in Anthropology at George Washington University and an MA in Archaeology from the University of New Mexico. He served in the Army (1969-1971) and was an interrogator in Vietnam, partly on the Cambodian border.
Jack did government background checks for the Washington Division of Investigations, wrote booklets and brochures for the National Park Service, and was an editor/writer for Sea Power magazine (U.S. Navy League). He was a free-lance author with a life-long interest in archaeology, ocean mapping and mining, and railroads and transportation.
Jack was the founding member and president of the Shepherdstown Station project which culminated after 10 years’ effort in saving the Shepherdstown railroad station as a mixed use dental office and community center, dedicated by Senator Byrd in 2001. Jack initiated the Duffield Station project, now with the Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission. He was also a founding member of the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum.
Jack is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally, daughter Lauren Harr (Seth), son Brian Snyder (Laura Kate), granddaughter Stella Harr, sister Morgan Llywelyn, and nephew Sean Winter.
