Carol L. Dyer

Nov 21, 2025

We’re heartbroken to share that our sister, Carol Lynn Dyer, passed away peacefully at her home in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, on Sunday, October 26th, at the age of 77.

Born November 12, 1947, in Madison, Wisconsin, Carol was the first of six siblings. She was preceded in death by our parents, Beverly and Sidney, and our brother Paul. She will be deeply missed by Laurie, Gene, Rob, and Steve, along with her dearest friend, Linda.

Carol lived life entirely on her own terms — smart, strong-willed, opinionated, and fiercely independent. She spent most of her life in Washington, D.C., where she became something of a downtown icon and a talented jeweler whose creations found their way into the hands of many in Georgetown and beyond.

In her later years, she made her home in Shepherdstown, where she built another circle of close friends and a community she cherished deeply. Carol wasn’t outwardly bubbly — she was more of a lovable curmudgeon — but those who knew her best loved her sharp wit, honesty, and the big heart she sometimes kept tucked behind her tough exterior. She also had a remarkable way of befriending and empowering other women, helping them find their strength and independence in her own unique, no-nonsense way.

Carol loved science fiction — Star Trek was perhaps her favorite show of all time — but she devoured all kinds of imaginative stories. Ironically, for someone who loved futuristic worlds and new ideas, she was a self-proclaimed Luddite who never quite embraced technology herself. That contradiction was pure Carol — thoughtful, funny, and completely her own person.

She loved her friends and had a rare gift for bringing people together. She’ll be deeply missed and lovingly remembered — always at warp speed toward the stars.
