Ernest Knipe
Ernest Knipe, 70, began his heavenly hike on November 11, 2025, at Hospice of the Panhandle surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Martinsburg, WV, on January 5, 1955, he was the son of the late Howard and Agnes Knipe. Ernie was a graduate of Martinsburg High School Class of 1973 and was a longtime fan of the Bulldogs and Mountaineers. A man of deep faith, he was a devout member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown. Ernie – a retired Verizon employee – enjoyed woodworking, farming, biking, photography, and trains. He loved the outdoors and hiked every trail at Antietam National Battlefield; many people will remember his tour of the battle complete with Nutter’s Ice Cream at the end. Ernie was known for his unwavering kindness, abundant generosity, and quick wit.
Ernie enjoyed family time with his siblings, in-laws, and their spouses and children, but most of all he cherished time with his wife, daughters, and loyal dog, Toby. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Rosie Knipe, daughters Sarah and Jennifer Knipe, and Jennifer’s husband, Alexander Hill.
The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, November 14, 2025, at Brown Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 9:30 AM on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Ernie’s childhood parish of St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father T. Mathew Rowgh, Celebrant. Interment was at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in Ernie’s memory to Martinsburg Rescue Mission or Hospice of the Panhandle.
