Joanna Lorraine Snyder

Dec 12, 2025

Joanna Lorraine Snyder, beloved teacher and mentor to thousands of students over nearly three decades at Musselman High School in Inwood, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2025, with family at her side.

Born and raised in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Joanna was a proud graduate of Martinsburg High School. She went on to earn degrees from Shepherd College, Shippensburg State University, and George Mason University, as well as a Certification in Gifted Education from West Virginia University. Her dedication to learning–and to helping others discover the joy of it –defined her life.

Joanna taught Social Studies at Musselman High School from 1961 to 1989, shaping generations with her deep knowledge, compassion, and unwavering belief in the potential of every student. Her impact extended far beyond the classroom. As Advisor to the Student Council for 21 years, she built a culture of school spirit rooted in participation, belonging, and excellence. She introduced the tradition of flying the school’s “Victory Flag” after athletic victories, sponsored two annual Spirit Weeks, organized bonfires and pep rallies before home football games, and planned statewide football celebrations for the team and community in 1974 and 1982.

Her creativity and enthusiasm became part of Musselman’s identity. Joanna crafted the school’s famous outdoor Christmas window messages–

· “Christmas is Great, First in the State” (1974)

· “Santa Says Ho! Ho! Ho!, State Champs 13–0” (1982)

She also originated the lasting phrase: “The Apple, The Mark of Excellence.”

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the school and community, Joanna was inducted into the Musselman High School Hall of Fame in 2007.

A devoted member of Independent Bible Church, Joanna lived a life of faith, service, and quiet strength. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Dutchie Snyder, her sister Doris Snyder Howard, and her brother James M. Snyder, DDS . Though she never married, she poured her heart into the young people she taught and mentored, and her legacy endures in the countless lives she influenced.

A private funeral service will be held for the family. A public memorial service will be announced at Independent Bible Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
