No one needs to stray outside of Shepherdstown to get a little bit of culture in their lives.

With craft stores and artists populating the streets of downtown, residents and tourists can find just what they need. And if its the theatre that tickles one’s fancy, well then Shepherdstown truly is the place to be.

The fall theatre outlook is a robust one, with Shepherd University’s music department presenting the opera “Hansel and Gretel” this weekend. The Opera House on German Street will screen for a final week “Winter’s Bone,” winner of Best Picture at the Sundance Film Festival. The old Opera House will also present “Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky,” another film that will surely satisfy the theatre-goer’s palate.

Then there’s the Full Circle Theater Company’s upcoming season. The company, full of talented producers, directors, actors and technicians, will open their 2010-2011 season tonight with “A Thurber Carnival.” Other treats of the season include “A Christmas Carol” and “Last of the Boys,” sure to be hits with the community.

And who could forget the Annual American Conservation Film Festival, now in its eighth year. Held the first weekend in November, the festival unites the art of documentary, people and the environment. Over 20 movies about conservation will be featured and attendees will even get the opportunity to discuss the issues with the filmmakers themselves.
