It takes a village

By Staff | May 15, 2015

The saying goes that it takes a village to raise a child. Using only the first phrase of the saying, I offer that it takes a village to make a community event successful. ‘

The efforts put in by local homeowners for this weekend’s Back Alley Garden Tour are nothing short of monumental. Having gotten a glimpse of a few of the offerings, I can only say that you don’t want to miss this event.

Being one who kills a plant by looking at it, I am forever amazed at what others can accomplish who have that green thumb. And accomplish they have as they have cleaned, planted, spruced up and prepared for the public eye to come into their backyards. Kudos seems to fall short of the words needed to commend these individuals who share for these two days what they enjoy throughout the spring and summer months and beyond.

The efforts put in by organizers within the Shepherdstown Community Club should also not go unnoticed. Many planning sessions have been held and many hours spent in first soliciting garden owners, then creating brochures, marketing and preparing for the event. Those who spend their time simply for the love of their town should be recognized and commended.

Make every effort to get out either Saturday or Sunday (or both) to enjoy and recognize the hard work of your friends and neighbors. Gain inspiration for your own garden or simply relax and enjoy the fruits of other’s labors. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.
