Book sale a success

By Staff | Nov 4, 2011

The 2011 Men’s Club Book Sale is now history. It was a huge success generating over $7,000 to help us maintain the War Memorial Building and Morgan’s Grove. But it was also great fun working with so many thoughtful volunteers who knew a lot about books. The sheer number and quality of books and volunteers were extraordinary.

Of course, this annual fundraiser is dependent on the contributions of area residents who graciously donate valuable books that we could see had been treasured possessions. A number were over a hundred years old. Many had interesting inscriptions, were first editions, and even signed by the authors. Well over half of those we gathered found an equally appreciative new home. They truly are “gifts that just keep on giving;”

Because of the volume of books collected this year, and some held over from prior sales, we added a day to the sale in order to allow more time for people to peruse the books. Many took advantage and some came back more than once. We spent over a week sorting and arranging the books. In this effort several area book deals were also major contributors and supporters. They shared their knowledge and helped us significantly in identifying books that had particular value. It also made the point that the “on-line” business community is very much an integral part of Shepherdstown.

It is impossible to mention by name all of our wonderful volunteers, but I have to thank profusely Art Winebug and his wife Susan Brown. For the second year in a row they co-chaired the book sale from beginning to end. When you assume total responsibility for making something as demanding and complex as this year-long effort happen, that is very special. Thanks again everybody!
