Books sought for annual SCC fundraiser
As many Shepherdstown area residents are aware, the annual Book Sale is one of the Shepherdstown Community Club’s (SCC) primary means of raising funds to sustain operations at the War Memorial Building on German Street and Morgan’s Grove Park. The annual event has become an indelible part of the unique features that define our little community. It is much more than just a means of raising money. As always, “getting there” is as important as the end result. Numerous families in our community generously donate books, CDs, records and associated items. Volunteers, including Shepherd University students spend a week sorting, organizing, and setting up for the sale that normally fills both floors of the building. The sale this year will be held on Oct. 17 19.
We are mindful of the fact that often the books contributed have long been part of the treasured family collections and we treat them with appropriate reverence — thinking ahead to the time when we ourselves will have to pass along our own libraries. Books easily fall into that special category of “gifts that just keep on giving”. Our work is made easier by the thoughtful contribution of a local company that provides us with a spacious storage unit. So we are in a position to accept books whenever they are available throughout the year. Since the SCC has long been established as a 501-3- c (not for profit) organization we are able to provide documentation for tax purposes for should that be a consideration.
