Clarifying points on Shepherd Village
I am writing to thank the Chronicle for the wonderful coverage by reporter Kelly Cambrel of the presentation I made last week at SAIL’s monthly Brown Bag Lunch regarding Shepherd Village. I also need to clarify several points.
The proposed retirement community which is to be located on East German Street/River Road, is neither a project of SAIL (Shepherdstown Area Independent Living) nor endorsed by the organization. As a founding board member of SAIL, as well as a member of the LLC which is developing Shepherd Village, it is important that I make this distinction.
While the goals and vision of the two organizations are similar, i.e. helping the elderly remain in their own homes as long as possible, SAIL is a dues-supported non-profit that provides personal services, health and wellness education, and social activities to its members.
Shepherd Village will be an over-55 ADA compliant neighborhood of homes and common facilities planned, owned and managed by the residents, that encourages connection and mutual support, affirms environmental sustainability and is designed to be fully integrated into our vibrant Shepherdstown community.
