The homeless are not helpless

By Staff | Feb 14, 2019

I was disturbed by the headline of the article on providing shelter for the homeless printed in the Jan. 25, 2019 Chronicle, “Helping the helpless.” The people who need shelter are not helpless! They are people who currently do not have places to live. Many of them have jobs that pay poorly — could you live on a minimum wage job? Or they may not have the skills to get a job. They should be treated with respect.

As a person who volunteers at JCCM two days a week, I like to think that my work will assist people to become more independent and need fewer services. The people we serve should be seen as people who need help, not as people who are helpless.
