Take advantage of living in a college town
My husband and I chose Shepherdstown as our home, in part because of our love of theater, after hearing Ed Herendeen talk on NPR about the Contemporary American Theater Festival. We love the town of Shepherdstown. But it was the presence of Shepherd University that led us to the final decision.
I have once again been reminded of the joy of living in a small university town, now that Shepherd University is again offering all sorts of programs that would satisfy any interest that one can imagine every day of the week. I hesitate to tell you everything that I have done, as I do not want to play favorites. But needless to say, my husband and I have been part of a wondrous smorgasbord of events over the past few weeks. Many times we have had to choose between several events at the same time and it is not an easy choice.
Shepherd University is small enough that you can become friends with the professors and the students. There is nothing better than hearing the School of Music students or the creative writing students sharing their own poetry or listen to a lecture by one of the professors or see the art shows in the Phaze 2 Gallery, where there is currently a faculty exhibit. I love theater, so I must make one pitch for a specific event. You will not want to miss Shepherd University Contemporary Theatre’s program production of “When We Were Young and Afraid” the week of Nov. 5-14.
Dana Costa is Shepherd University’s new Executive Director of University Communications and she has hit the ground running. She writes a highly informative newsletter, “Initiatives, News and Events,” every Friday. I encourage you to join the list, to keep abreast of Shepherd University events you won’t want to miss, by e-mailing university-communications@shepherd.edu.
