Annual community club book sale is worth a look

By Staff | Sep 30, 2022

I am writing to encourage members of the Shepherdstown community and others here in the Eastern Panhandle to visit the Shepherdstown Community Club’s Legendary Book Sale, which begins on the evening of Oct. 6 and continues through Oct. 16.

We have extended the sale, to encompass two full weekends, in order to make maximum use of the wonderful assortment of books, CDs and games that thoughtful donors have given to us for inclusion in the sale over the past year. We have received an unprecedented number of books from over 120 families since last year’s sale. I have been privileged to meet and enjoy long discussions with many of the donors, gaining insight on unique items included in their gift and the history of their interest in books and family traditions. In several cases, we have received entire family libraries, a particularly treasure and legacy. For many, it has been hard to part with such valued possessions.

The collection, which will be displayed on both floors of the War Memorial Building on tables and a variety of book cases to maximize access to the books, includes well over 100,000 items. Thanks to another thoughtful donor, we will stage additional books in a U-Haul truck behind the former library building and replenish its shelves as spaces open up.

The purpose of the sale, of course, is to raise money to continue maintaining and operating the War Memorial Building and Morgan’s Grove Park. But an even stronger motivation, is to recognize and fully appreciate the inherent value of the donated books and get them into the hands of readers. So please come visit us during the sale!

I doubt that many will leave empty-handed. Of course, book lovers who would like to linger and help with the sale are always welcome.

Mike Austin, of Shepherdstown
