Needing more than the Green New Deal
In response to an article published on March 7, 2024 by CBS News, “February 2024 was the hottest on record, with global temperatures surpassing critical climate threshold,” it is more apparent now than ever before that our communities need to develop a response to our climate issues. Our climate is changing rapidly, as we see an increase in higher temps, high winds, fires, floods and freezes.
While significant progress has been made toward addressing climate change since the introduction of the Green New Deal five years ago, recent laws like Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act don’t do enough to fully solve the problem. What’s worse, as stated, February of this year was the hottest February ever recorded globally, marking the ninth consecutive month of record-breaking temperatures.
As someone who cares deeply about the environment, labor rights and racial justice, I call on our local, state and national elected officials to be outspoken on these issues in relation to jobs, care, climate and justice.
I call on these officials to invest in our communities by standing firm on making our climate a priority. Fixing these problems is not only feasible, but it is also immensely popular. If politicians want to win in 2024, they should be running on a platform to solve climate change, address generations of environmental injustice and support programs that create good, union jobs — a Green New Deal.
