Tribute to a beloved community member

By Staff | Sep 27, 2024

I would like to share our deepest condolences with Kenny Lowe’s family – on behalf of Shepherd University, the Shepherd University Foundation and Shepherd Athletics.

Kenny loved his family, his friends, the university, and the community at large. He was a proud West Virginian and a true entrepreneur, who never forgot his roots. I’m sure that each of us has a special story to share about how Kenny helped us at one time or another.

I am particularly grateful for his remarkable, innovative ideas that he felt would help our students, faculty and staff. His vision had no boundaries – from improving the horse racing experience, to renaming Shepherdstown to ShepTown, to building a beautiful condominium complex on our campus and much more. He was dedicated to helping every group he encountered – and he did it with a smile that we will always remember.

Kenny loved to keep all of us updated on a variety of topics, but, most recently, one he was especially proud of was following the career trajectory of Tyson Bagent. Like many of you, I will cherish the last text I received from Kenny, which was about Tyson and how this young man has represented West Virginia so admirably. Well, I would say knowing Kenny Lowe made us all a little better – a little more kind, a little more compassionate and a little more aware of how we can help others.

He was a visionary leader, and most importantly, he was our friend. He will always be in our hearts and minds.

Mary Hendrix, Shepherd University president
