Strongly opposed to school closure
I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed closure of North Jefferson Elementary School. Closing this school would have severe negative impacts on our community, especially on the families and students who depend on it.
Research indicates that small, community-based schools positively affect student outcomes. Students in smaller schools often achieve better academically, build stronger relationships with their teachers, and engage more in extracurricular activities. The National Education Policy Center highlights that these schools foster a sense of community and belonging, which is crucial for student success, particularly in low-income areas.
The proximity of North Jefferson is essential for families in Fox Glenn, who can walk their children to school and rely on this convenience for after-school activities and community events. Closing the school would impose a significant burden on families lacking reliable transportation to a more distant school, further marginalizing an already vulnerable community.
When Rockwool was introduced, we were assured that North Jefferson would remain open. To close it now would break that promise and undermine the trust of families who relied on this assurance for their children’s education. Moreover, claims of a declining student population are based on outdated data. Jefferson County is the fastest-growing county in West Virginia, with significant development underway. The cited study does not reflect the influx of new families and children who will soon be entering the school system. With over 1,000 new homes and apartments being built, we could see around 500 more children by next fall.
I urge the Board of Education to consider the collective voices of parents, caregivers, teachers and staff. We are united in our commitment to our children and the future of our community. Please keep North Jefferson Elementary School open.
