SAIL going strong into 2013

By Staff | Jan 4, 2013

Shepherdstown Area Independent Living (SAIL) continues to grow as the organization adds new members, partners with community businesses and other non-profits, provides transportation, companionship and so much more to members.

In 2012, the organization was able to hire a part-time office manager/volunteer coordinator. A grant for $5,000 from the Jefferson County Commission helped fund that position. The group welcomed their first community based partner, Tom Miller, owner of Smallwood and Small Insurance. And the group was able to provide a reduction in dues which are now $250 per single member and $500 per household of two or more.

Efficiency in the group was demonstrated when, during Hurricane Sandy, each member was contacted to determine if there were any special needs with relocation due to power outages or any other needed assistance due to the storm. The process was repeated during the Christmas Eve snowstorm where all members were called. Follow-up calls were also made.

Various activities were provided for members throughout the past year including a visit to the National Museum of the Marine Corps near Quantico, Va.; a bus tour of the Antietam luminaria and post-event party; a fall picnic, a visit to several churches in Chambersburg, Pa., to see breathtaking stained glass windows; and a jaunt to the Museum of the Shenandoah to hear some big-band music and tour the facility.

According to members, the best trip was to the Kennedy Center for an all-Strauss concert by the National Symphony Orchestra.

The weekly walkers and board-game players continued to meet throughout the year and will continue into 2013. Brown bag lunches are planned for the third Friday of each month at Trinity’s Fellowship Hall.

The database of service providers has proven useful. Any number of vetted and/or referred providers can be obtained by calling Linda at the SAIL office. Arborists, electricians, carpenters and more can be found.
