These free programs resume the week of September 16: “Lap Babies and Ones” will be on Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. and the “Twos” will meet from 11:15 to noon on Tuesdays. The “Threes, Fours, and Fives” program on Wednesdays offers parents a choice of 11:15 to noon, or 1:15 to 2 p.m. Ages 6 through 12 are invited to attend the “After School Program” on Thursdays from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Kevin Henkes, award-winning children’s author and illustrator, wants to talk about books with children ages five through ten. There will be a free webcast in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 2 to 3 p.m. During the webinar he will talk about the books he’s written, including a new easy chapter book titled The Year of Billy Miller. Children who attend will have the opportunity to submit questions for Mr. Henkes. Beforehand, meet his unforgettable characters by browsing a display of his books now through Sept. 17. Sept. 23 is the last day children may bring in a completed summer reading log to receive a packet of eight prizes donated by local businesses.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Inquiries should go to 304-876-0910, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all former hoopsters. We are starting a womens (age 30+) pick-up basketball night on Fridays from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Clarion gym in Shepherdstown. Knowledge of the rules and experience required. Play will include 1/2 court 5×5 and 3×3 games. Cost is $5/hr. Also, recruiting women ages 50-55, 55-60, 60-65 and up, to form basketball teams that will represent West Virginia in the National Senior Games. The Jefferson County Council on Aging will host their 2nd Annual Motorcycle Ride at the Anna Mae Reedy Senior Center. Pre-Registration preferred to guarantee t-shirt. Cost for driver $25 (includes lunch and t-shirt); Rider $15 (includes lunch). If you register at the door, the cost for driver will be $30 and t-shirts are subject to availability. Registration is 8:30-10:30 a.m. with a two hour ride to begin at 10:30 a.m. BBQ lunch will be served after ride. Motorcycle ride benefits Jefferson County Council on Aging: Anna Mae Reedy Senior Center and JCCOA Jefferson Center. Registration is due by Aug. 9. 5th Annual Car Show and Pork Barbecue will be held today and Sept. 15 at Rock Spring Church, 114 Poor Farm Road, Kearneysville. First 50 entries get free dash plaques. Trophies, live music, food, children’s activities and more. For more information, contact Newman Sisk at 304-582-1460.

Sept. 15

The National Conservation Training Center will host their annual social and membership drive on Sunday, Sept. 15 with a 2 p.m. is the guided tour. Followed by the social at 3 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. a sneak preview of The Best Student Conservation Films of 2013 will be held.

The event is free and open to the public.

For those interested in membership, yearly are $5 for students, $10 for Individuals, $20 for a family and $50 for Sustaining. Membership registration will be available at the social or online at www.friendsofnctc.org.

Sept. 16

Phaze 2 Gallery Exhibit Opening: The Department of Contemporary Art and Theater at Shepherd University presents an exhibit featuring the Fine Art Faculty. The exhibit opens on the 16th in two locations spread across campus. The Reading Room of the Scarborough Library will host a reception from 4-6pm and Phaze 2 Gallery located on the first floor of the new Center for Contemporary Art and Theater from 5-7 p.m. The exhibits are free and open to the public. A Transportation Presentation will be given by Cheryl Keyrouze, director of Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority, at the War Memorial Building from 7-9 p.m.

Sept. 20

Shepherdstown Community Club movie night formerly scheduled for Morgan’s Grove Park will now be held at 7:30 p.m. at Reynolds Hall, 109 N. King Street. Free and open to the public, the presentation is ’42 The Jackie Robinson Story.”

Dr. Scott Hippensteel will give a talk entitled “A Study of David Maslanka’s “Unending Stream of Life” at noon in the CLS auditorium.

Sept. 22

The 44th annual William Eldridge Van Metre reunion will be held at 1 p.m. at the St. James Lutheran Church social hall in Uvilla. All branches of the Van Metre families are invited. Bring a picnic lunch to share. Food, fun and fellowship for all.

Learn from representatives of local programs about how we can take care of our loved ones and stay in our homes as we grow old or we become ill.
